The Friends of Thringstone - Summer Heritage Event 2008
The Friends of Thringstone's second heritage event took place on 6th September 2008 from 10am to 3pm at Thringstone Community Centre, The Green, Thringstone.
The event linked with two themes - mining and pensions.
It has been 100 years since the old age pension came into being, thanks to no small amount to Charles Booth who gave us our community centre, and it has also been 110 years since the terrible events of the Whitwick Pit Disaster.
Our village is ever conscious of its connections to mining, and we wish to celebrate the mining heritage we have, and have the opportunity to remember those who lost their lives as a result of mining.
The event was opened by David Taylor MP, and there was a short prayer to allow families of those who have lost families to mining the opportunity for reflection.
